The imaginary world of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson tapestry
The Aubusson tapestries, a regional craft listed as a UNESCO World Heritage, unveil the first piece of their latest challenge: to illustrate the movies of the Japanese animation master.
The Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie, in collaboration with Ghibli Studios, is currently working on a monumental work composed of five pieces. Created according to traditional weaving methods, it will represent mythical scenes from Hayao Miyazaki's world, such as the forest of Princess Mononoke, the moving castle of Hauru, or the plains of Omus from Nausicaa.
Save the date: on March 25, 2022, at 2:45 pm on the YouTube channel of the Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie of Aubusson, meet up to live a great moment: the "fall of the loom", unveiling the hanging entitled Ashitaka relieves his demonic wound, inspired by the movie Princess Mononoke!
Combining ancient craftsmanship and contemporary culture, the Cité de la Tapisserie is not at its first try for such project. In 2017, it had carried out a similar project illustrating the famous world of Tolkien. These contemporary creations are in line with the great adventure stories, traditionally illustrated by the workshops of Aubusson over the centuries: the Odyssey of Homer, the epic of Alexander the Great... Creations dedicated to imagination and reverie, intended to cross time, to (re)discover urgently!
The tapestry will be completed in 2023 and will be shown around the world. In the meantime, the progress of the project can be seen in the weaving workshops of the Cité de la Tapisserie in Aubusson. A special area dedicated presenting extracts of the films and samples of the hangings is also to be discovered on the spot during the manufacture.
