Metropolis at the cinema
The animated masterpiece Metropolis is back in theaters.
Originally released in France in 2002, Metropolis returns in a remastered version on December 24, 2025. This is a golden opportunity to revisit a breathtaking film that brings together many big names in animation.
Metropolis was originally a manga by Osamu Tezuka, the god of manga. It is a short science fiction story from 1949, one of his earliest works. The story follows Inspector Ban and his nephew Kenichi as they investigate organ trafficking in the city of Metropolis. Humans and robots coexist there. But the most powerful man in the city has dark intentions. The title Metropolis refers to Fritz Lang's 1927 film, although the mangaka had not seen it at the time of writing.
The film's screenplay was written by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, the author of Akira, and directed by Rintarô, known for Galaxy Express 999, Kamui's Sword, and his comic book biography, My Life in 24 Frames per Second, published by Kana last year and nominated for the Daruma Award for Best Slice of Life Manga this year.
