Screening: Kyrie's Song, with Shunji IWAI
In partnership with the Maison de la Culture du Japon in Paris
The film follows the itinerary of several characters: Kyrie, a street musician who, following a trauma - she lost her mother and sister in the 2011 tsunami - can now only express herself through singing. Natsuhiko, a boy in search of his missing fiancée; Fumi, a teacher who has taken in troubled people; and Ikko, a mysterious woman who has erased her past and given up her name to become Kyrie's manager.
Their paths and destinies intersect as they wander between Ishinomaki, Osaka, Obihiro and Tokyo.
"Initially, it was a simple story with two girls, as in the novel I wrote. Over time, it evolved into a story that now spans thirteen years, and I ended up imposing a burden on these two characters, like a cross, much heavier than I had imagined. They, and the other characters in the film, travel the world of their own free will, trying to live with valour and freedom. Somewhere under this sky..."
