Izumo. The birthplace of Japanese spirituality where the invisible threads of fate are revered above all else.
Izumo is a city to the north of Hiroshima, nestled into the coast along the Sea of Japan. Surrounded by sea and mountain, studded with two lakes and beautiful rivers, Izumo is bursting with nature.
Once a year, gods from all across Japan are said to gather in Izumo to meet. We call this time of year "kamiarizuki" or "the month with gods". Izumo is well-known as the Land of Myths as many of the major episodes in Japanese mythology take place here. You can see the locations that feature in these myths in place names and the very shape of the land itself. Feel the powerfully spiritual atmosphere of the region in your very bones.
Izumo is protected by a vanguard of ancient shrines and temples with long, unbroken histories. Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine is undoubtedly the foremost among them, but the region is also home to Ichibata Yakushi Temple, Gakuenji Temple, and a myriad of other Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
Walk along Momen Kaidō Cotton Road or stroll through Sagiura and experience the ancient townscapes of Japan. See for yourself how the lifestyle and cuisine of the people there melts into the townscape itself.
