PRESENTATION

Keisei, a poetry reciter, and Hagi, a composer, formed the duo Xiè. Both of them had different careers; Keisei started singing at the age of 9 and made her major debut with King Records in 1996. Hagi’s music is used in various domains like in TV commercials, films, Tokyo fashion shows, etc. The name xiè is derived from a legendary creature in Chinese fairytales, the xièzhì, which is said to be able to discern good and evil in all. Likewise, xiè refers to the willingness to convey emotions through music.

Xiè’s performances are based on shigin, the art of singing poems. Shigin is an art based mainly on Chinese and Japanese poems. It is usually performed accompanied by a koto and shakuhachi. However, Xiè is not only singing traditional poems, they also made their own compositions inspired by foreign poems. This way, it gives rise to a new style of the art.

Discover their performance and enter their poetic world on the Sakura stage.
