These dolls with eyes made of glass have been the most popular dolls amongst the Japanese little girls, during the last four centuries. Created from wood or wood pulp, the visible parts of the doll are then coated with a chalk-based pigment, while the body is created from a fabric stuffed with sawdust. They are usually made by more than one craftsman, since each one has his specialty (head, hair…).
And for Japan Expo, Setsuko MATSUMURA, master Ichimatsu and one of the rare one to make an entire doll by herself, offers to show you the traditional manufacturing processof these little Japanese dolls.
