Enshu tea ceremony
This summer, Japan Expo welcomes the greatest master of the Enshu tea school, at the WABI SABI area. He looks forward to meeting you all at his booth, that will be transformed into a traditional tea room !
Enshu tea school
The Enshu tea school was founded by Kobori Enshû (a Shogunat Tokugawa tea master) at the beginning of the Edo period, which was approximately 450 years ago.
This school’s biggest characteristic is the fact that they have associated the notion of beauty to a spiritual concept called wabi-sabi (the fullness and modesty we can feel when faced to natural phenomenons), thus giving importance to light, estheticism, the quality of objects, etc. The aim of this school is to make everyone feel the harmony through beauty.
This artistic notion appeared in Japan during the elaboration of gardens and buildings of the Katsura imperial villa and of Kyôtô’s Nijojo castle, and had afterwards had a lot of influence on Japanese art in general.
At the beginning of the Meiji era, with Japan’s opening to other countries, the Enshu school had a worldwide success. Nowadays, it has a four-century old story and many disciples on the five continents.
Enshu’s tea ceremony
The Enshu school stands out by its tea style called “sabi of the beautiful”.
It teaches not only the tea ceremony, but it is also known as being multidisciplinary: its main interests also lie in floral arts, in landscaping, in architecture, etc.
This year, the greatest master of the Enshu tea school comes at Japan Expo to display and explain his tea and floral arts, on a booth that will be partly transformed into a traditional tea room!
