Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri is a quite young festival and has only started in 1964. For 3 whole days, it brings together a million visitors every year. With time, it has become one of the top festivals in the region of Tohoku.
100 groups of dancers, 10,000 in all, parade in the city, wearing a traditional costume and holding a hanagasa in their hand. Hanagasa are bamboo hats decorated with fake safflowers which are typical of the prefecture of Yamagata. They dance along the city’s main street in a procession led by majestic decorated floats, to the rhythm of hanagasa-daikodrums.
