Biography

Chara-designer, mangaka and animation director, Yoshiyuki SADAMOTO is famous for working on the Evangelion saga, from the series to the manga and films. He is also one of the founding members of the major animation studio Gainax who produced Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Yoshiyuki SADAMOTO debuted in animation in 1984 in a first studio which he quickly left for Gainax. His first assignment as character designer in Gainax was for Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. Then he kept on working as a chara-designer, key animator and animation director on animation films and series, such as Gunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and many more.

From 1995, he became the chara-designer of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, and then of the film Evangelion: Death and Rebirth. He is also a mangaka and the author of the adaptation of the series as a manga, his first full series which was to be released until 2013. In 2007, he came back to animation on Evangelion with 3 new movies: Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, as a chara-designer and animation director.

In addition to his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion, Yoshiyuki SADAMOTO did chara-design for many more anime series and films, lately on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, or Wolf Children in 2012. He’s still working as a mangaka, on the short Route 20 or one shots such as Dirty Work and System of Romance, and has published several artbooks. He’s part of various other projects, such as the video game franchise .hack or the cover of Eric CLAPTON's album Pilgrim.

Yoshiyuki SADAMOTO was Japan Expo’s guest a few years ago, in 2008 for the 9th Impact. He’s back in 2015 as our Anime Guest of Honor to celebrate the 20’s anniversary of the Evangelion saga with you, and is meeting you for autographs on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. He’s also expecting you on Saturday for a panel!

To pay a tribute to Yoshiyuki SADAMOTO and Evangelion, Japan Expo is also proposing a dedicated exhibit: from the creation of the saga up to now, go through 20 years of this major work of Japanese animation.
