True facts: Goodies

Goodies have become part of the success of animation works and we’re telling you a bit more about this aspect today!

Animation, as any economic activity, has financial requirements. To solve part of the problem, with years, producers have developed a system of goodies derived from anime.

There are several types of goodies, with posters, magazines, clothes, stationery, CDs or DVDs, designed to fit the audience of the anime. Goodies are different for a children’s anime or for a series made for teenagers.

The most common goodies in the 70s and 80s were shitajiki (desk pads), index labels, or can badges with illustrations.

To produce shitajiki for instance, the manufacturer will request an illustration from the right owners. Sketches are made to work on the illustration until the final one that will feature on the product. When the illustration has been validated, the making is launched. The illustration is printed on a semi-rigid plastic sheet on which is added a very thin transparent plastic sheet. A layer of varnish finishes the product.

Lately, plastic folders have been more popular. They’re cheaper to make and easier to use for promotion.

The financial contribution of goodies allows producers, right owners and animation studios to invest the benefits in other anime
