Satsuki and Mei’s house: inside the movie My Neighbor Totoro
Satsuki and Mei’s house is more than a wonderful creation that has been part of the dreams of My Neighbor Totoro fans, it has been built for real in Nagakute in Japan and you can even visit it!
Satsuki and Mei’s house was built in 2005 as part of the World’s Fair that was held in Nahakute near Nagoya, on the theme of "Nature’s Wisdom", focusing on ecology, renewable energies, and nature’s wonders. A range of themes that naturally recalls of My Neighbor Totoro and fits perfectly with the building of Satsuki and Mei’s house. Goro MIYAZAKI –Hayao MIYAZAKI’s son – designed and oversaw the construction.
Though the World’s Fair ended, the house was reopended to the public in 2006. The place visitors discover is set right after the movie, when Satsuki and Mei’s mother is back home. Outside and inside alike, the sets have been designed to look exactly like the movie, with every detail such as the acorns under the house.
