Culture day

November 3 is Culture day in Japan: this holiday is celebrated with many events all over the country!

Posted on

Originally, November 3 was Emperor Meiji’ birthday, who was born in 1852. In 1948, this day officially became Culture day, to "promote culture in the love of freedom and peace".

That day Japanese and foreign figures are given the Order of Culture, for their work in any cultural field. The ceremony is set at Tokyo Imperial Palace. But everyone is part of the day’s celebrations and museums across the country are free. Festivals and exhibits are also organized on this occasion.

Hakone Daimyô Gyôretsu is most likely the most famous event organized on this day, in the district of Yumoto Onsen, in Hakone. 170 people dressed up as samurai and court ladies parade in the streets, reproducing daimyô gyôretsu, feudal lord processions taking place in the Edo period (1603-1867). The lord settled in a palanquin carried by his people and followed by his retinue. Shows are organized during the procession and in the end a geigi dancing show takes place.
